Concert Goes Well, Avril Sticks To Long Pants
August 31st, 2008 Avril Lavinge
How has Avril lavigne’s concert gone in Malaysia? Here’s an article in the New Straits Times titled “Avril Rocks Stadium Merdeka,” published on Aug 30. via Asiaone News.
Despite protests, the controversial Avril Lavigne’s Best Damn Tour made its way to Stadium Merdeka last night.
More than 6,000 screaming fans welcomed the singer as she arrived. The tour marked her first visit to Malaysia.
Rock princess Lavigne first rose to fame in 2002. Her three albums, Let Go (2002), Under My Skin (2004), and The Best Damn Thing (2008) have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
Clad in an all-black attire, the rock singer abided by the required dress code and did not expose too much skin.
The Canadian, accompanied by a five-piece-band, opened the show with her biggest hit from her latest album called Girlfriend.
Lavigne, who is married to Deryck Whibley from the rock band, Sum 41, was accompanied by a dance troupe that consisted of four back-up vocals.
Not known to have the best vocals in the industry, the 23-year-old relied heavily on her showmanship through gimmicks and playing her infamous pink instruments, including guitars, piano and drums.
The 75-minute performance ended with Lavigne belting out one of her earlier hits, Sk8er Boi.
Lavigne sang 17 songs including Complicated, My Happy Ending, Runaway, Losing My Grip, I Don’t Have to Try and I’m With You.
More than 50 protesters from Pas Youth distributed flyers to show their disapproval of the concert which they deemed inappropriate for the Merdeka Day celebrations and also because it was held too close to the holy month of Ramadan.
Earlier, GAMIS (Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia) (Pan-Malaysia Graduates Federation) organised a peaceful rally from Masjid Negara to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm.
Lavigne’s concert created a media frenzy when its promoters Galaxy Group failed to obtain permits for the show despite early publicity and ticket sales.
The concert only received approval a week before the day of the concert after a series of pleas and meetings between the promoters and the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage.
Welcome To Malaysia, Avril

And give us the music. The Petronas Twin Towers — used to be the world’s tallest building but now the world’s tallest twin towers (duh!) — are not built on Rock n Roll, but Malaysians do rock and they do roll.

Youth Movement Plans Demonstrations Against Avril Lavigne’s Concert In Malaysia
August 27th, 2008 Avril Lavinge
A youth movement from a Malaysian opposition party is planning to stage a protest over the government’s decision to allow Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne to perform in Malaysia.
The concert is scheduled at the National Stadium in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
The deputy head of the youth movement of the Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party, Nasruddin Hassan, said they would hold a protest if the concert was allowed to go on. Nasruddin made the statement even after the Malaysian government reversed its earlier decision to cancel the show.
But there’s no turning back now. The show must go on, protest or no protest.
This will be Avril’s first concert in Malaysia, the country that has allowed performance by the Pussycat Dolls; not that I’m saying the Dolls are bad.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s the music and performance that count. If they are any good, hey, go ahead, make a concert.
Avril Lavigne Says Concert In Malaysia Is On
August 22nd, 2008 Avril Lavinge
Avril told MTV News on Thursday (Aug 21), “Well, I’ve actually been approved by the government to play a show. I’ve already sold 10,000 tickets there, so I will be going to put on a concert for the fans.
“They tend to, you know, sometimes not want Western artists in their country. I respect that, but at the same time, you know, there’s people that listen to music there and want to see their idols and stuff, so it’s all good: been approved by the government and going to go put on a show and have fun.”
No Go For Avril Lavigne Concert In Malaysia?
August 21st, 2008 Avril Lavinge
Fans of Canadian pop-rock singer Avril Lavigne are reeling in disappointment when they were told her hugely anticipated concert in Malaysia has been cancelled.
Malaysia’s arts, culture and heritage ministry said it would not give permit to the performance, scheduled at a stadium on Aug 29. The reason? The timing of the concert coincides with the Independence Day celebrations period and that there would also be prayers to be held around that time of the month.
Some youth movement of a political party also said that the show was inappropriate as it could bring about bad influence to the young, and had urged the government to stop the concert.
I don’t understand these people. Avril is a nice girl. Hot but nice, and I haven’t heard her doing anything close to a Britney or a Lindsay.
